The Great White Heron in New York

I saw the most beautiful Great White Heron the other day. Something caught my eye when I was driving. It was a big white bird that I didn't think was indiginous to this area. I am still trying to research it to see if this is just a bird passing through or why I was abe to see this bird in this area of Western New York. A great White Heron is just something that we don't see in this area. Of course I stopped to take several pictures.

It Was An Egret

I found out that the Great White Heron is not indigenous to New York. When I looked it up, I found that the Egret is very, very similar in looks to the Great White heron. I also called the local audubon society and they assured me that it was an Egret. It was still a beautiful bird, a beautiful sight.

As I watched the bird, it was so graceful. When it flew, I was able to get some pictures of it in flight. As I continued to watch, I saw another very large bird. A Blue Heron (i think) fly away as well. You can see the picture below.

I did find out that the White Egret passes through this area of Western New York in the Fall months. They can be spotted at those times on their way to warmer temperatures. I also found that the type of bird that I photographed here was A GREAT WHITE EGRET. It is related to the GREAT WHITE HERON family. The way it is distinguished is by it's yellow beak and black legs.

The Great White Egret is a symbol for the National Audubon Society. It became that in part because for a time, they used to kill these birds so that their feathers could be used, especially for decorating hats

This is very interesting, I had a similar run in with a presumed extinct / not from the area bird. Come to find out it was a different bird from the area. Great story but I was left wanting to know more. Though your writing was good this seemed more like a status post on Facebook or something. We readers want to know more. Hoping I can come back to read a more in depth review.

Nice! I saw a blue heron and a night heron here in Toronto about a week ago.
